Why visit Chinko
The Chinko Reserve lies in the Haut-Mbomou prefecture, in the southeast of the CAR — at the exact opposite corner from Dzanga-Sangha, which is in the southwest. It is a vast protected area where the Sudano-Guinean savanna meets the northern edge of the Congo Basin forest, managed since 2014 by the NGO African Parks under a 50-year public–private partnership with the Central African state.
What awaits you
- Savanna and forest wildlife — a rare transition zone where forest and savanna species coexist
- African Parks conservation — see one of the most ambitious conservation projects on the continent
- Pristine, utterly remote wilderness — one of the most isolated and least-visited wild areas in Africa
- Rare species sightings — bongo, giant eland, wild dog, eastern chimpanzee
Practical information
Chinko is extremely remote: access is by private flight, and the nearest service town is Obo, capital of Haut-Mbomou, with very limited amenities. A visit requires complete self-sufficiency and heavy logistical planning — this is not a conventional tourist destination but an expedition. Feasibility and access depend directly on the region's security conditions, to be checked case by case.
Given the remoteness and the logistical and security requirements, any visit is planned well in advance with our local partner. Tell us about your project alongside and we'll pass it on.
